The first Sunday in November professional and amateur runners gather in the big Apple from all over the world to run the ING New York City Marathon. This tradition began in 1970 where 127 runners participated in the 26.219 mile race which looped through central park. That year only 55 people crossed the finish line and although runners today cover the same distance the number of people to cross the finish line in 2009 recorded 43,659. This coming sunday ING participants will run through all five of New Yorks boroughs over two million fans will line the streets, bridges, and park a long with 100 live bands with 315 million viewers watching from all over the world.
Go Big or go home… NYC marathon Understatement if I have ever heard one. As a spectator the energy and enthusiasm that is displayed by runners is awe inspiring. To all the runners this coming Sunday good luck, have a wonderful run, and props to you. I will be watching for you!
If you missed it this year, Marathon Monday, November 8th will mark the first day to sign up for the 2011 marathon. Don’t mind if I do!
