The Noho Lab by Lululemon

Some people love it. Some people hate it. The all day workout wear ensemble, that some people never seem to take off. Now you can take it off, take it all off… and try this on for size. Lululemon high-end, beyond-the-gym Lab offshoot opened their second outpost, first in the U.S., in New York’s NoHo neighborhood this week.

Each store concept features store design and merchandising specific to that geographic location. A commonality however lies in the transparency of design: the design and innovation take places 20 feet from where consumers are shopping.

Marcus Le Blanc, head designer of the first U.S. outpost, has a design aesthetic that portrays tailored lines and clean silhouettes, a unique focus in Lululemon’s design direction. Le Blanc is opening the Lab to other design insight by bringing emerging New York designers on board for collaborations, set to launch this coming fall.

Lululemon, the activewear norm outfitting a majority of every workout class. This stronghold in the athlesure market has furnished the ability to harness technology and customer data to a new market segment.   A part of life removed from gym centric and sweat soaked activities.

Boasting a slightly higher price point, the Lab also offers mens apparel. To get Lab goods you will have to make a Lab field-trip – currently not available through e-commerece purchase. However you can check out the collection HERE.

Lululemon Lab’s next brick and mortar location hasn’t been released to the public. Although a safe bet can be placed on Los Angeles, London, and Sydney.

Zara is the latest big name apparel brand to join in on the ever expanding activewear marketshare.  The capsule includes 56 pieces of gymwear apparel and accessories now available for pre-order HERE.  Every item remains under a $70 price point and from the looks of it will hold true to the standard Zara hallmark – minimal, modern in style silhouettes (simply simple) that will satisfy the need it now retail therapy  without breaking the bank. Until these athlesure pieces reach the consumer a complete review is in queue –  performance tbd. If in fact Zara’s gymwear is inline with functionality – we will can release a review of – into it (pending performance).

Whether travel, never-ending work hours, or a generally all-over-the-board schedule, there is a lot of pull on life that can leave your workout routine neglected. The simple solution may be streaming. Whenever, wherever workouts and classes accessed anytime/anywhere (with space for a yoga mat and a solid WiFi connection). Here are some viral options for you to try out.

    YogaGlo’s online classes range from 5-120 minutes, and students can pick between super physical “body” classes to more spiritual or meditative mind and heart classes. The big selling point, though, is that they fly in some of the country’s best yoga teachers, so you get access to incredible resources. In addition, members have access to lectures and workshops by yoga scholars.

  • Tracy Anderson

    This option needs little in the way of introduction: This is the workout that GP does, made available in living rooms everywhere. Tracy films her weekly Master Class, which means that you’re getting the same routine as what goes down in the studio classes—and like a traditional membership, the moves change every week. Die-hards can actually install the signature cardio fly floor in their garages or spare bedrooms for the full experience.

  • Ballet Beautiful

    It’s not really surprising that Mary Helen Bowers’ ballet-based workout chain is growing like crazy; her body does the advertising itself. The streaming workouts are interactive, meaning that thanks to the magic of Skype, instructors can actually see you in your home and offer real-time feedback on your form.

  • Pilatesology

    Since everything happens on the mat, Pilates has lent itself nicely to at-home videos since the days of VHS. For devotees of the old-school style, streaming service Pilatesology is truly an indispensable resource. Workouts can be tailored to fit time availability, skill level, and equipment availability; a membership affords access to everything from beginner mat classes to advanced reformer work.

  • Daily Burn

    At $12.95/month, Daily Burn costs about as much as you’ll probably spend on lunch today, but the payoff is significantly more substantial. The website offers diverse workouts from a stable of in-house instructors, including classes in Pilates, yoga, weightlifting, and cardio. Easy-to-follow meal plans are also included.

  • Yogis Anonymous

    Yogis Anonymous is based out of a homey Santa Monica studio, and the videos on their site are footage of their actual classes. New classes are uploaded frequently, so there’s no risk of boredom, and the lack of staging makes the entire endeavor feel very comfortable and a lot less cheesy. If you live in LA, it’s easy to supplement the convenience of the digital classes with the community of their real-life studio.

  • Peloton

    The concept behind Peloton is pretty genius if you’re a spin fan: purchase one of their bikes for your home, and you’ll get access to live and on-demand spin classes taught in their New York studio from the screen mounted to your bike. Those with a competitive streak will appreciate that metrics are displayed throughout the ride (if you’d rather not know, you can always collapse that view). In addition to their classic indoor classes, they offer outdoor-style rides with professional cyclists through their partnership with the Garmin team.

Locations will circle the globe and NYC is launching one of the first. Location is confirmed in the Hudson Yards project on the West Side of Manhattan. Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, will include a 60,000-square-foot gym, indoor and outdoor pools and restaurant featuring organic and locally sourced health focused dining. Open date is specked for 2018 and the Los Angeles hotel shortly after in 2019.

Juice Shop

A Juice Shop that sells…? You guessed it, JUICE. This Shop O’ Juice takes the highest quality fruits and veggies, the true OG in SF juice.  All juices are unpasteurized and cold pressed daily. The small window shop juice connoisseurs are knowledgeable and personable. They exude a passion for their health (glowing skin on these ppl. no lie) and the company that they are building. And when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the Juice Shop aims to reduce environmental impact by using locally sourced produce, reusable glass bottles (when returned you get some cash – win for you – win for mother earth). Oh and they deliver! So it’s either pick up or delivery, located conveniently on 1994 Union St. (corner of Union and Buchanan) – neighboring both Lulu Lemon and Lucy, is seems like this block is taking shape. Drive by from Monday – Friday  7am – 6pm and weekends   9am – 6pm.

Good Physique Design

Workout space is an important element in the perfect workout. As merging gap between fitness and design merge a multitude of gyms that are well… breathtaking in both the aesthetic sense along with the good ole’ increased heart rate – directly correlated with a good sweaty workout. The latest example of ‘good pysique design’ emerges at the Plaza hotel in NYC. La Palestra wellness centers have conceptualized a hybrid of proper medical care with fitness in an upscale facility without disrupting the indigenous elements of their respective locations. The mission of La Palestra health centers focuses on integrated health.

Designers Frank Gehry, La Palestra delivered a holistic haven of wellness, consisting of exam rooms and cardio center accessed through a stunning Gehry staircase. Despite the facilities opulent feeling occupying the space, the function of the space remains in tact, a functional, classic gym.

Pat Manocchia Founder of the La Palestra chain conceptualized a space where fitness and health of the human body remained safe and secure. Each space is designed individually catering to the original fabric of architecture.

“Culturally, from an exercise perspective, people are made to believe that the idea of beauty is that it’s flawless,” says Manocchia in pointing out an interesting parallel, “but it’s the exact opposite. The flaws are what makes something beautiful.”

Using the space presents architectural challenges. Variations in ceiling height were exploited to create alcoves of light that aid in one of Manocchia’s central ideas, which is privacy. The placement of equipment and room-dividisions are laid out to create the right environment for optimal performance.

If one feels as though they are being observed or judged, or crowded, your focus shifts towards your self-conscious of how you look rather than focusing on what you are doing. Individual bathrooms (complete with shower)  take the place of locker rooms contain individual showers, dressing room with wardrobe built in. Another common gym staple you wont find here is floor to ceiling mirrors – mirrors are situated away from the wall to prevent feeling boxed in, while lights shine with very specific variants to reflect times of day and year.

It’s no surprise that this gym contains the highest quality equipment, from top-of-the-line Woodway and Cybex treadmills to artisan-made vaulting boxes Manocchia seeks to support the most important design element in fitness—the human body. “When it comes to innovation in the field, it’s not about reinventing the wheel or inventing something new, it’s about how good design is re-engineered to support the human body,” he says. “You have to understand how the body works so you can utilize equipment that fits into movement patterns and provides a broad toolbox. Dumbbells can be used for all sorts of things, and are you going to make something better? No. We’re interested in the best-made version.”

The breadth and depth of La Palestra’s medical and training attention—makes it the logical choice for those with health concerns or injuries, or anyone looking for a superior level of care integrated into their fitness routine. A training session comes accompanied with the message that techniques and routines should be learned, and are designed for members to take away and practice on their own.

Run To Be Stylish

For the eighth year running (pun intended), Nike will host an epic marathon fashion event.  Next weekend, October 16th, 2011, 20,000 male and female runners (no discrimination here, ladies) will race to raise money and awareness for the Lukemia and Lymphoma Society. 

Though runners of both gender are welcome to participate, this is a race pretty obviously geared for the gir here l in the game (insert background track – “this one’s for the girls”), with some great marketing catered to our gender.  Keywords: fashion forward, fitness, and FUN. Consider this a walk down the RUN-way. Take part in the festivities and you’ll experience:

  • An oh-so-fabulous fashion expotique in downtown SF Union Square 
  • A breathtaking race course (see race route map below)
  • And a whole host of on-course support and entertainment to make the trek as easy as a catwalk 

Once you’ve walked the walk & strutted your stuff all over the finish line, expect a a celebration along the lines of a VIP afterparty: 

  • Event: Post-race celebration, food, music, and more

Pumped Up Fashion Tour

Want to get to the heart of fashion?  1st step – pump up your heart rate.

The Fashion Center Business Improvement Association partnered up with CFDA’s FashionIncubator program+MADE Fashion Week+ the Meatpacking District Improvement Association all to highlight New York City’s storied Fashion District. Thirty handcrafted, designer bicycles adorned & painted by Isaac Mizrahi, Nicole Miller, Elie Tahari, Nanette Lepore, Rebecca Minkoff, Carlos Falchi, and Prabal Gurung, have been gathered by Bowery Lane Bicycles for all to admire, right in the heart of NYC.  How eco friendly//fashion savvy can you get?!

Don’t worry, you can play with the toys at this exhibit – You can borrow one of these embellished beauties for an hour at a time at the designated areas free of charge in the Meatpacking District and Fashion District, as long as you’ve got valid I.D. and credit card to ensure the safe return of the bikes. Come Sept 16th, when fashion week has removed the last stiletto, bikes will be auctioned to benefit the CFDA. One idea+lots of creative hands+time donated+a few thousand miles trekked=a wonderful gift that definitely gave back – your heart’s truly thanking you for this one.
