The Noho Lab by Lululemon

Some people love it. Some people hate it. The all day workout wear ensemble, that some people never seem to take off. Now you can take it off, take it all off… and try this on for size. Lululemon high-end, beyond-the-gym Lab offshoot opened their second outpost, first in the U.S., in New York’s NoHo neighborhood this week.

Each store concept features store design and merchandising specific to that geographic location. A commonality however lies in the transparency of design: the design and innovation take places 20 feet from where consumers are shopping.

Marcus Le Blanc, head designer of the first U.S. outpost, has a design aesthetic that portrays tailored lines and clean silhouettes, a unique focus in Lululemon’s design direction. Le Blanc is opening the Lab to other design insight by bringing emerging New York designers on board for collaborations, set to launch this coming fall.

Lululemon, the activewear norm outfitting a majority of every workout class. This stronghold in the athlesure market has furnished the ability to harness technology and customer data to a new market segment.   A part of life removed from gym centric and sweat soaked activities.

Boasting a slightly higher price point, the Lab also offers mens apparel. To get Lab goods you will have to make a Lab field-trip – currently not available through e-commerece purchase. However you can check out the collection HERE.

Get a grip all the way to Namaste

Our June sweat session is almost a wrap…. on that note I will bring you one of my sweaty essentials I will not leave home without.

Jade Yoga has turned my yogi upside-down, and can turn you too as you say goodbye to slipping and sliding. Jade’s fusion mat (that comes in extra long for us extra tall – thanks for being giant friendly!) is made with open cell, natural rubber has long been used where safety demands non-slip performance. Jade takes advantage of the non-slip properties of natural rubber- resulting in the best slip-resistance on the market. I thought Jade was too good to be true and after news that this company is all green (not the yoga mat color, silly-for the good of our environment) it may just be the case. Jade is constructed of natural rubber, a renewable resource tapped from rubber trees – containing no PVC or ozone depleting substances. Perfect for the yogi concerned about the earth and made in the USA in compliance with all U.S. environmental and labor laws and through its partnership with Trees for the Future, JadeYoga plants a tree for every mat sold.

$99.95 may be a bit more than the average yoga mat, but after one slip free vinyasa flow session with this Jade Yoga Fusion Mat will help you get a grip all the way to Namaste.

Watering HOLE

Your body is made up of 75 percent water as is the planet we live on…coincidence? I think not!

This month’s SWEAT SESSION is almost over. With the sweltering weather I hope you all have been staying hydrated (putting back in what you have been putting out)? The water bottles are out my friends – eco savvy and well designed, because everyone is doing it!

My friend and personal trainer Paul Hagerty CSCS, NASM-CPT (pictured below), is a renowned personal trainer and exercise physiologist in New York City. He makes sure his clients know that the basis of any bodily process is water. His clients have learned from Paul’s emphasis on H2O that you can’t work out hard without being well hydrated, nor will you see any positive physically changes without being hydrated (i.e muscle development). As Paul says, “Water is the key to life,  and the key to making your life a better one.”

Thanks for the water wake up Paul! Although we hear it daily, don’t forget to keep hydrated in this summer heat.

Paul recommends that if you are concerned about your daily water intake, seek out a dietitian and have your water intake analyzed. Everyone’s ideal H2O intake varies on weight, diet, workout regimen, and many other factors! So get the facts to get your gallon gauge go-ahead! Drink up!

Shortaaaaaa – Nike Training Compression Shorts are some of my fav’s to work it out in and sweat it out in.

If you have never heard of the clothing article know as the ‘compression short’ before this very moment –  think new age spandex – as in new fabrics/colors/and gym clothing acceptance – defined by as; form-fitting garments usually worn by athletes. When worn they cover the athlete’s waist to mid or lower thigh, often made from a spandex-type material, similar to cycling shorts.

Benefits of compression shorts are that they keep the muscles warm to prevent muscle strain and fatigue, and wick sweat away from the body to prevent chafing and rashes. In addition, there is some evidence that compression shorts may enhance athletic performance, and help to keep undergarments in place, and for certain sports, like baseball and softball where they are also known as “sliding shorts”.

Being a fan of Nike training Compression Shorts there are many other companies that make a cute compression short; Under-Armor, Adidas, Lulu Lemon. You will pay a little extra, but they will last.  I wear them playing volleyball, running, and for all around training. Note that these guys tend to be a little thin so if I’m feeling not so in shape Nike offers a thicker material with the same fit and shape that kind of act as Spanx.

One noteworthy blogs – 4th and Bleeker (because the styling/simplicity/and the fact that the author is the only feature) author has offered up a workout short fashion shoot. Lets face it these shorts can be defined in every sense of the word HOT.

Make A Splash

With a month dedicated solely to sweat, why not play it cool in the pool? The water might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of shaping up and slimming down,— but perhaps it should be. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than swimming.

A water workout can whittle a sexy, sculpted silhouette. Researchers at Indiana University compared recreational fitness swimmers with non-swimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips.

I know, I know… a water workout doesn’t offer up the whole lace-up-your-shoes -and-go convenience that running does, but with these four key items you’re set to make a splash: H2o, —swimsuit, cap, and goggles—.

So go ahead and jump into one of the best workouts for women.

A dollar… dollar… is all you need!

I said I need dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need…And if I share with you my story would you share your dollar with me…

I know, I know… enough with the song quotes already (thank you ALOE BLACK); but this is a perfect intro to one of my favorite sweaty places in NYC.

Yoga to the People

Is only a dollar – that’s right (1$) donation based only studio – suggested class donation is $10 you can also rent a mat $2 or grab a bottle of agua $1.

This is a great place to stretch (insert molly Shannon S.N.L stretching here) and sweat!

I know when I come here I’m going to get a great workout. With three locations in NYC,  my favorite being St. Marks (power Vinyasa). 27th st. (Traditional hot yoga), Hot Power Vinyasa (38th st), alternative locations in Berkley, and San Fran.

If you read Yoga to the peoples mantra…. for a nutshell overview of this up and coming Yoga phenomenon; it says everything about their yoga ideal. These ‘People’ have something good going for them…which leads to one downfall…. this place is packed (coming from a New Yorker, packed may be an understatement)! But lets face it – a great workout for a dollar! It’s worth the fifteen min stake out for a spot. Just cross your fingers your neighbor has showered in the past day or so, finding your Om is a little hard when holding your breath.

With classes jam packed personal direction is hard to come by. I knew a thing or two about yoga when I tool my first class here (if I say the words flow, and up dog, and nothing related to yoga comes to mind – you may want to spend some extra cash/time to get some beginner stance instruction – and get you accustomed the yoga logistical lingo.)

For a little outside insight my big sis (who bends in so many directions I sometimes wonder how we are related) who is an avid Yogi, and a DC resident which means her personal space bubble extends a bit farther that the average New Yorker’s.

Pura Vita - Costa Rica

Carol’s first/only class at Yoga for the People, first impressions: absolutely shocked at how many people they managed to cram into the room! They just kept pouring in. For first timers I’d recommend doing what Eva did for me: Get there early (they usually end up turning people away anyway!) and snag a spot by the wall or up front to ensure that at least one side of your mat will not be bordered by a sweaty stranger. The good news is the instructors don’t hold back and the participants are respectful, so it’s an efficient workout with minimal distractions (considering). That being said, this is not a class for beginners. There is minimal explanation of poses and series’ (many are referred to by their Sanskrit names only). That could vary based on the instructor though. One last tip: bring a towel because with that many people the room gets steamy – you’ll definitely sweat!

For some additional insight; Courtney Novak (yoga to the People regular) take; “You don’t feel the intimidation factor here like in other studios. It’s easy to follow the instructor voice and not have to follow what the other more knowledgeable students are doing) they use real language – not all yoga speak – which makes it easy to follow and easy to get into. Its accessible and far from pretentious.

I love this place! Im sure you will to. So give it a try, sit on the street corner if need be…. grab that dollar to cover your fee.

Yoga to the People Mantra

Music Sweat Best Bet

Music could not be more important to me when I am working out. The right music can not only put me in the right workout mindset, but it can give me that extra push I need to step it up.

I always seem to take classes that have good music. I don’t know how important it is in your workout but it’s vital to a kick myself into shape workout regime.

When on a hard workout I take my iPod Shuffle 3G.

Fill it with your favorite pump up songs and being the world smallest music player you wont feel weighed down or restricted (side note I saw someone running with the iPad through central park the other day – now that’s a missed Kodak moment missed opportunity) . iPod shuffle 3G start at 59$ and comes in some cute colors.

I opt for different headphones as the apple headphones are to big for my tiny ears and fall out when the sweat starts dripping. Like a persons fingerprint everyone had their own favorite headphones for working out . I like Adidas OMX 680 Sports ear clip Headphones with Volume Control and Adjustable ear clips. Nothing more annoying than worrying about your headphones falling out when you are concentrating on working out.

To use you own headphones – purchase this adaptor from apple; Belkin Headphone Adapter with Remote for iPod shuffle (3rd. Gen.). So worth it!

Check out some music below that will put you in the mood!

Pump Up the Jam

Did I just reference Jock Jams VOLUME 1 (Oh Yes…Yes I did!)

Because we all know…sometimes were just not in the go all out – push it – pump it up mood. The workout mood that is…and we all need a little kick in the right direction now and then, and what better way to jump-start your workout than some pump it up jams? Brought to you by none other than Stephanie Spangler. She’s got a gift , that’s for sure to get you in the right gear, she get the jams pumpin… look ahead the crowd is jumpin.

So check em out – and pump it up a little more…get the party going on the dance floor –

Thanks for sharing Steph!

You Spin My Head Right Round – Right Round.

She’s amazing, fire blazing…Stephanie Spangler’s spin classes that is.

Her up-beat music and challenging spin workouts consist of various workout routines that leave her students dripping sweat and begging for more. There literally is a waiting list to get into her classes! Sweating it out in her class is an understatement.

Her body belongs on a poster… this stellar physique can be attributed to her extensive background in competitive sports beginning at age four with swimming, then adding in a mix of dance, soccer, volleyball, and field hockey.  Through the years she has racked her weekly workout hours to a whopping 40.

What is she doing now with all those goodie powers? Steph is current member of NYRR and competes in everything from 5k’s to marathons, including NYC ING and Philly (a current PR of 3:22.29 and split of 1:32.01), not to mention Iron Man triathlon…. that’s, right I said IRON MAN!

In 2008 Steph was certified to spin it round, and after a couple of rotations (six months to be exact), began teaching. She currently teaches her cardio party at the following locations:

  • Evolution Sports Club in Astoria, NY at 7:00pm on Monday evenings
  • Boom Fitness on 4 Park Ave, NY NY at 7:00pm on Tuesday evenings
  • Boom Fitness on 81st and 3rd, NY NY at 6:30am on Thursday mornings

So go catch a class with this FLO RIDER, and sweat it out Steph style.

No stoppin’ her now, her sweat is on roll… this roll would not be possible with out her favorite equipment which includes her Mizuno’s or Asics running shoes and her choice obsession: Nike Apparel’s line of compression shorts.

When Steph wants to get down, down, with a serious sweat session and doesn’t feel like making up another lesson plan, she calls on personal trainer Sean Wright – who has some seriously intense boot-camp sessions.

Pop in next post cause her mix will be ours – Steph’s playlist that is – I’ll be sharing her favorite beats to speed up your feet.

LULULEMON ATHLETICA goes sweat savvy

If you don’t know what LULULEMON is, you should!

Over the past nine years Lululemon Athletica has become the fastest growing athletic apparel company in their market. Founder Chip Wilson had the right idea developing technical athletic apparel for yoga, running, dancing, and most other sweaty pursuits designed specifically by athletes for athletes.

What else could you want from a company, oh let me think….earth conscious (75% of fibers used are natural sustainable and ORGANIC) this has got to be fiction!

But no…… this company has taken on superpowers and is ready and willing to defeat any obstacle put in its path. Sweat and stink stand no chance when facing Silverescent® made with real silver fibers –woven into fabric which double anti-microbial properties and are excellent for high-sweat activities.

Check out some of my favorite lulu products that sock it to the sweat!

Manduka Equa towel sweat soaker upper extraordinaire! Stays in place and comes in some super-cute colors!

Slip less Headband – soak up the sweat in cute colors and doesn’t slip while your in a bind (literally)

After all this talk about sweat I’m rather thirsty! What a great water bottle – who said sweat isn’t cute?

Props to those founding Lemoner’s who have taken note that they can in fact positively influence their families, communities as well as everyone who walks in to the LULU realm including me!

Make A Mark – (On Your Calendar, That Is)

I woke this A.M. and immediately checked my email (something I rarely do…I am not a morning person to say the least, but I had an intuition) to find a long email from my big sis.  It’s funny how sisters can see the big picture – as in, “Eva you need to find your niche – you have writer’s block: this is what you need to do.” So thanks to Carol each month will be dedicated to something… that pertains to women, exercise, workout, fashion, equipment, music, classes, trainers, or just flat out fun that I want to share with Y-O-U.

So, now that we are all on the same page, I will dedicate the month of June to Carol’s suggestion – Sweat- and run with it! Literally.

So let’s get it on ladies- It is swimsuit season after all!

Oh, by the way, please SHARE with me what you’re curious about or interested in– if there’s a sport you want to know about or a theme that you want me to play around with – don’t hesitate to send me a note. I would love to hear what you have to say.
